Professional Opportunities & Job Skills

I think that I have used my interdisciplinary in my profession when I was a server. I think despite how much I hated being a server I was good at it, being a server in a fine dining restaurant you need to be able to multi task, it is one of the main qualities you need to be able to be successful. You need to be nice, warm, and seem concerned. But you also need to be able to not seem like they can walk all over you because believe me they will if they can and all that aside you need to always have a goal in mind. You need to be able to get things done and think about what you need to do next while you are talking to the current person. Although this does not have much to do with my areas of study it was being interdisciplinary to me it was crossing borders and brining different skills that I personally have together to be the best at what I was doing.

Aside from this I think that my weaknesses for my personal career are that I like to go out to much, that sometime when I walk away from my area of work I do not like to think about it any further. When I am there I give 100% of myself but once I am gone I don’t do so, so I think that would be my strongest and weakest points all together in one. I think a way to improve upon this would be to make sure that after I leave something like my internship I set aside time to allow myself to reflect on what it was that I did and think about if there is anything else that I need to get done.

Two clubs that are useful for my career are Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children and Amnesty International both of which I am a member of.

I think that my internship has helped my development by being in a doctor’s office and watching the way that they interact with patients which is something that seems so simple and it can be but the more exposure that you get to this the better you will be and the more comfortable and a better doctor it will make me.

Throughout college, my main occupation has been serving at restaurants also. I could not agree with Jessica more including the skills you need to possess in an interdisciplinary way including being able to multitask, which seems sometimes your doing a millions things at once but also great overall people skills. When you’re severing a table you must be able to read people well using everything from body language and voice tone to an overall attitude in order to give the best service you can. I do not plan on going to the restaurant business but for now, it has been decent money and I feel even more importantly its great practice with dealing with people which is extremely important for my future careers.

More things I am doing to improve my professional skills is for one I am currently interning at a physical therapist office. This opportunity could potentially turn into a future job with PT Specialists or at least a great letter of recommendation so I am making a huge effort on being a reliable employee. With the exception of an intern position at a CPA’s office in high school, it’s been rather easy to call in and say I have a test to study for or can’t come it for some other reason. However with this internship, I know the impact this can have on my future so I am I feel this is my chance to improve on my worse work habit.

The two careers I plan on having in future involve physical therapy and being a partial plant nursery owner. I already attend meetings for Florida Native Plant Society at Leu Gardens which has been very informative and great for networking with future clients. Something that I am not involved with but would be beneficial is the Florida Physical Therapist Association. They have many great seminars which would help me to gain great insight in the field.

  1. In order to put myself through college I joined the Air Force Reserves. In so doing I've not only been able to put myself through college but also learned a valuable trait working on avionics systems. My experience in the reserves has also allowed me to have a clear view on not only what opputunities the military has to offer upon my graduation, but many other federal jobs as well on the civilian side.

  3. That is good Adraham. How do you feel a IDS degree would be looked about if you were appliying for a federal job? Since something like the service would seem to be so structured upon rules?

  4. That is a good question Jessica. And to be completely honest, I'm hoping that this class reveals those oppurtunities to me. For example, I have a A.S. in Avionics System Technology from the Community College of the Air Force. With that and any batchlors degree I can find management positions at airports, police departments, and airplane manufactuers. However, what doors the IDS degree itself opens I am unclear of. Are you considering federal employment? Back when I worked at a hospital I remember hearing about oppurtuities with the government that pay for your residency?

  5. I have used interdiciplinarity a whole lot in my professional life. The extent of my jobs has been working and managing at Panera bread and working as an RA. As an RA interdisciplinarity plays an important role because I deal with all sorts of things. Also dealt with everything from money to dealing with angry customers at panera. My strongest job skills include leadership, management, multi-tasking, interpersonal skills, and problem solving skills. I have used all of these in both of the jobs that I have held. Too professional organizations that are involved in my chosen career of law are the American Bar Association and the Florida Bar.

  7. I have to completely agree with Jessica and Janelle in terms of the service industry. Right now I am currently a server at a restaurant that my boyfriend's dad owns. Not only do I have to incorporate the interdisciplinary skills that are part of the job such as customer service and problem solving, but physical stamina (standing/running/kneeling/walking etc. for an entire shift can start to wear on the knees, let me tell you!) plays into it as well. To be an interdisciplinarian means being able to integrate. I feel like I do a great job at mixing my people skills with the strains of my job. When our restaurant gets packed and I'm physically drained, it takes a lot of effort to learn how to cope with needy or angry customers while still employing time management skills so that everything gets done. I try to keep up small personal conversations with the customers, especially the regulars, and I feel like the intimacy that they experience is one of my strongest job skills.

  8. Chris, it sounds like you have mastered some pretty important professional skills that will really help you in becoming a lawyer. Its so interesting how skills can benefit a person in such different job settings. Your experiences at Panera with customers, management, and people's moods is still exactly what you will need to be an attorney. Its kind of funny actually that they are so diffrent in terms of activity but the skills you need are the same.

  9. Abraham.I am currently not a member of either however i will be after I graduate law school. I am however a current member of the law school admissions council which helps with law school portfolios and the application process. The only difference between ABA and the Florida Bar is that the ABA is nationally recognized and the Florida Bar is only within Florida.

  10. My professional history is very brief since I have been fortunate enough to be supported by my parents as long as I continue my education. However, I have had several jobs including coaching a tackle football team, being a referee, and working the door at a local club/bar. My interdisciplinarity helped me most while coaching a youth tackle football team. Mixing both my knowledge of football from having played high school football and the knowledge I received from officiating countless games helped me be a very successful coach leading my team to a 47-0 victory in the championship game.
My strongest job skills would have to be my intelligence and competitiveness which help me strive to do the best job I can at whichever task I face. Unfortunately, I do have weaknesses which I need to work on. My weakest job skill would have to be that if I am not that interested I procrastinate and put things aside to the last minute. In order to improve that, I need to stay on top of things regardless of how interested or important the task is to me.
Since I would like to be a dentist in the future, time I have spent with several dentists shadowing them in a normal day and sitting through surgeries in which I was taught many things about what it takes to be a dentist and to perform surgeries will help me in the future. I also learned that it is more than just performing the surgery, it is also crucial to develop a good relationship with all patients.

  11. Emily, that is an interesting point that I have never noticed about servers. Now I realize how physically tiring it can be to run around serving people for an 8 hour shift at a restaurant. I will definitely think twice about making a server go back and forth for something from now on.

  12. Janelle, I think that your internship at a physical therapists office can be extremely beneficial in the future. Like you said, it would be a great source for a letter of recommendation and who knows maybe you will work in that office in the future. Good luck and you are definitely on the right track and establishing many useful connections for your future.

  13. David, I am definitely in the same boat as you with procrastination. I think that is probably my weakest working quality as well. No matter how organized I think I am at the time, I always find myself at a deadline with 12 different things to do and wondering when I let myself get so behind. I feel busy all the time, but obviously I'm not as much as I could be. I need to work on that most definitely so that I am successful and productive; I don't want to keep this bad habit going in my professional future AT all.

  14. I would like to third the procrastination thing. I am awe-full when it comes to getting things done in advance. I think that having and utilizing a planner has helped me recently with overcoming my problem!
