Reflection

Share how you're planning to use reflection in developing your e-Portfolio content pagesShare your understanding of reflection. How is it different from description?

In developing my e-portfolio, I would try and reflect on the experience I have obtained in my field to convey an understanding of my skills I have learned through out school. I plan on discussing many of the projects I did throughout my college career. While discussing these assignments I will be reflecting on what I learned which will help to demonstrate my knowledge in all my areas of study. I will also try and reflect on the knowledge of my profession though many years of study of health sciences, commerce, and psychology so I am comfortable and confident when conversing with a potential future employer.

A description of yourself doesn’t always describe you in enough detail. It helps to reflect on and include past experiences, how you handled them and what was the outcome. Both clients and employers want to see real world experience and how you acted in past reflections.

I will use reflection in my research e-portfolio specifically in my personal statement. I will use the things that I have done and reflect on how they have changed my life and made me decide on what it is that I am doing after I finish at UCF.

I think that this is different from description because I am not describing what it is that I have done or am going to be doing I am going using the things that I have done and telling how they have helped me to find my passions and desires.

Interviewing Part 2

Discuss the best way to answer some of the standard and non-standard interview questions?
To answer standard questions in effective ways I think that you need to be able try to make your answers stand out from others because I’m sure that they hear the same sort of answers over and over if it is standard interview. For non-standard interviews I think the best way is to be you because in a case like this if it is non-standard I think that is what they are looking for. To really figure out who you are and what you can bring to the table so don’t hold back everything and show you are an individual like their interview style.

How to deal with phone interview and panel interviews?
Dealing with phone interviews I think you need to make sure to listen and not interrupt what the person is saying because it can be easily done and very irritating. And as far as panel interviews I think the best way to handle these is to act as relaxed as possible because to me they are really high stress, try to think of it as a group of people talking and make sure to look at every person in the panel not down which for me would be very tempting.

When is the time to talk about salary?
I think they best time to talk about salary would be if there is a second or third interview and if not once you are being offered the job on a first interview because if there is a second or third interview it is mostly a very good sign and you don’t want to waste yours or their time if they aren’t going to pay you enough and if there is only one interview I don’t really see any other time when you can considering because you don’t want it to be the first thing that you say.

-Jessica

Discuss the best way to answer some of the standard and non-standard interview questions?
Typical interview questions such as your background should be answered in a way that portrays your overall greatest strengths. With questions that ask about how you handled a difficult situation, you may want to answer by telling a straight to the point story that shows how you were able to diffuse or correct these altercations. Non-standard interview questions may often throw applicants of guard. The reason for this being to see how you react when put on the spot. Be prepared with quick responses to unexpected questions.

How to deal with phone interview and panel interviews?
Be prepared to think, dress, and act just as you would in a face to face interview. Just because you don’t have to physically show up doesn’t mean that it’s not just as important as the real thing. Speak clearly and steer clear of awkward silences. Be a responsive listener.

When is the time to talk about salary?
Questions about salary should not be asked until the job has been offered to you. You don’t want to give the wrong impression that you only want this position because of the money. Employers want to see that you have some interest in the job for which you have applied.

Interview Post, Jessica and Janelle

Interviewing Part 1

Overall, I believed the interview questions to be very straight forward in getting to know a potential employee’s past experiences and future goals. The strength in my responses was focused on the ability to adapt to different types of people and environments while still bringing a positive attitude and insightful ideas to the table. Some questions only needed to be answered in a short sentence or two while others needed a little more detail in explanation. In a real life interview I could improve on the promptness in which I answer the questions as I would not have as much time to think about my choice of words. I think this exercise would have been more fun and beneficial to me if I had a webcam to add a realistic element to the interview. As far as the alternate response go, I feel that there are a number a good ways to answer an interview question depending on the individual and the job for which they are applying. If I could pass along a piece of advice to a future interviewee, it would be to practice because you don’t want to be caught off guard when talking face to face with your potential employer.

~Janelle

I think the most problematic question for me was the one that asked about how I applied common knowledge to solve a work problem. Other than that I feel that most of the questions were standard interview questions and not so difficult to answer. My answers were rather brief in comparison to the answers that were provided. I do feel that tools like this are great to use because they allow you to think about things that you probably have not thought about before a interview and they allow you to not be put on the spot.

These are my interviews:

Personal Philosophy, Career Goals, & Academic Opportunities

Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life:
Is to be the a physicians assistant who believe that someone as small as me can evoke a change in our health care system, can show how important health care is and that it is a right to us all and nobody should have access to something like health care while others don’t. I hope to do this while practicing a more holistic form of medicine, by trying to get the root of problems not just prescribe drugs to prevent one problem while creating another. As well as while doing this put some responsibility on the patient by trying my best to get them involved in their treatment and have a trusting relationship with me knowing I just want to help and not judge.

How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
I believe a dynamic health care provider cannot function with being interdisciplinary, seeing all aspects of life that create health problems, so I think it is interdisciplinary whether I were to see it that was or not.

How have your career goals altered?
My career goals have alter in that I chose to actually be someone who has medical knowledge but before I wanted to be a social worker and provide the same sort of philosophy.

~Jessica

I would have to say that my personal philosophy about my career goals begins with my ability to empathize with other people and how they respond to their environment. My philosophy is also deeply rooted in the origins of nature. Interdisciplinary in the fact that I can combine psychology, physical therapy and horticulture into a formula that enhances the curing of the mind, body and soul while healing the Earth as well through my ownership of a native plant nursery. My career goals have changed throughout college from my ability to become a more versatile, well-rounded individual and it’s through this integration that further allows me to achieve my long-term goals and personal aspirations.

Cover Letters & Resume

What are ways your resume can highlight your interdisciplinarity?

I think the only way that a resume can highlight interdisciplinarity is by your work or volunteer experience because it makes evident how you are planning on utilizing all of the areas that you are knowledgeable in and making them useful for a future employer.

What are some questions about cover letters you've have?

Do you think it is more beneficial to be professional or trying to show more of your personality in your cover letter?

To Whom It May Concern: I am applying for the position of Administrative/Marketing Assistant, which was advertised on the Palm Beach Post website, http://www.palmbeachpost.com/. The position seems to fit very well with my experiences, education, and career interests.

Your position requires skills in telephone, follow-up, and computer skills. As a current student from the College of Business at the University of Central Florida, I have had the opportunity to develop my skills in a professional setting and am ready to perform to the best of my ability. I have worked in an office setting for more than five years, where I have learned proficient use in the Microsoft Office suite and customer service, including phone sales. I was also responsible for interviewing all candidates for my previous job, as well as in my current position. I was awarded two awards based on customer service, including Employee of the Year in 2005 and Employee of the Fortnight in 2003. I am a highly motivated and organized individual who is willing to dedicate the time to make sure any job is performed correctly. My enclosed resume provides more details on my qualifications.

My background and career goals seem to match your job requirements well. I am confident that I can perform the job effectively. I looked into your company online and find it very interesting and would love to jump start my career with you.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to talking with you.

What are questions about resumes that you have and/or share some advice?

I do not have any really good advice or question but what I can say is that resumes are the first thing that a future employer see and in my opinion are a crucial part of making you appealing to them. Share any resources you've found about cover letters and/or resumes.http://career-advice.monster.com/resumes-cover-letters/cover-letter-tips/new-beginnings-for-cover-letter/article.aspx

Professional Opportunities & Job Skills

I think that I have used my interdisciplinary in my profession when I was a server. I think despite how much I hated being a server I was good at it, being a server in a fine dining restaurant you need to be able to multi task, it is one of the main qualities you need to be able to be successful. You need to be nice, warm, and seem concerned. But you also need to be able to not seem like they can walk all over you because believe me they will if they can and all that aside you need to always have a goal in mind. You need to be able to get things done and think about what you need to do next while you are talking to the current person. Although this does not have much to do with my areas of study it was being interdisciplinary to me it was crossing borders and brining different skills that I personally have together to be the best at what I was doing.

Aside from this I think that my weaknesses for my personal career are that I like to go out to much, that sometime when I walk away from my area of work I do not like to think about it any further. When I am there I give 100% of myself but once I am gone I don’t do so, so I think that would be my strongest and weakest points all together in one. I think a way to improve upon this would be to make sure that after I leave something like my internship I set aside time to allow myself to reflect on what it was that I did and think about if there is anything else that I need to get done.

Two clubs that are useful for my career are Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children and Amnesty International both of which I am a member of.

I think that my internship has helped my development by being in a doctor’s office and watching the way that they interact with patients which is something that seems so simple and it can be but the more exposure that you get to this the better you will be and the more comfortable and a better doctor it will make me.

~Jessica

Throughout college, my main occupation has been serving at restaurants also. I could not agree with Jessica more including the skills you need to possess in an interdisciplinary way including being able to multitask, which seems sometimes your doing a millions things at once but also great overall people skills. When you’re severing a table you must be able to read people well using everything from body language and voice tone to an overall attitude in order to give the best service you can. I do not plan on going to the restaurant business but for now, it has been decent money and I feel even more importantly its great practice with dealing with people which is extremely important for my future careers.

More things I am doing to improve my professional skills is for one I am currently interning at a physical therapist office. This opportunity could potentially turn into a future job with PT Specialists or at least a great letter of recommendation so I am making a huge effort on being a reliable employee. With the exception of an intern position at a CPA’s office in high school, it’s been rather easy to call in and say I have a test to study for or can’t come it for some other reason. However with this internship, I know the impact this can have on my future so I am I feel this is my chance to improve on my worse work habit.

The two careers I plan on having in future involve physical therapy and being a partial plant nursery owner. I already attend meetings for Florida Native Plant Society at Leu Gardens which has been very informative and great for networking with future clients. Something that I am not involved with but would be beneficial is the Florida Physical Therapist Association. They have many great seminars which would help me to gain great insight in the field.

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is what makes something like interdisciplinary studies possible. Being able to look at things in different areas of study and put them together to make a more dynamic and powerful mind or person. I also think critical thinking is what can make or break someone with a IDS degree, you have to be able to take all of those things that you have learned and show how they work together and how it makes you a better person for any position because have branched out to different areas of study and are able to see different sides of things and also take different approaches to certain situations because you have given yourself the ability to do so by expanding the power of your mind, but this is something you have to have good critical thinking skill to make useful and not just a jumble of little bits of knowledge.

I am not sure what the virtual professor is… Sorry!

~Jessica

Interdisciplinary is having multiple and interconnected disciplines and critical thinking requires a complex combination of skills. Therefore critical thinking is beneficial in being able to successfully combining these disciplines. Critical thinking involves thinking outside the box and questioning the unanswered. Interdisciplinary study is about combining different disciplines in an insightful way. I began my college education studying engineering. It wasn't long after I decided that this wasn’t what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Over time, I eventually discovered that I wanted to help people as my career. Through my multiple experience I have been able to combine multiple disciplines including the body which can be considered a machine. Using my critical thinking skills of how the body works and my empathy for people, I am able to combine these skills through physical therapy in an interdisciplinary way to become well rounded in my career.

Like Jessica, I have no idea what virtual professor is, but if any you cornerstone students want to clue us in, it's much appreciated!

Understanding Interdisciplinarity - Integrating Areas

Integration is the combination of things and in this case integration would be the combination of all areas of study in my IDS degree and how I will use them. But other examples would be something like while you are working out doing weight training and cardio together. So like jogging while holding 2 pound weights.

I think my areas of study are integrated fairly well, especially the biomedical sciences and health sciences. With the biomedical sciences you are learning the mechanisms and functions of the human body and the real meat of giving health care and then with the health science you learn more about policies and how health care facilities and providers do their job. The behavioral and social sciences is useful and integrates well but I think this is more useful for anyone with any area of study because we all deal with people on a daily basis and a better understanding of people helps us all. And I feel by going to PA school I will be integrating my areas very well.

Having integration is important because if you were not integrating your areas for at least your own personal development then the whole purpose and beauty behind a IDS degree is being missed, and as far as professional and academics I think if you academically excel in your areas and allow yourself to get the most out of them then you will excel in explaining why this has all made you better for you professional career and it will just show.
-Jessica

Interdisciplinary is the study and integration of multiple disciplines. Examples of integration could be the combination of trade skills with the knowledge of business. These are two areas that may contribute to the success of a person in a multi-disciplinary field like most jobs today. I’ve been able to apply interdisciplinary integration into my chosen field of physical therapy. A major in health sciences educates me on how the body works and the business aspects of the health field. My minor in psychology helps me to combine mind and body to become better in the practice of physical therapy, hopefully being able to know how to truly help a patient heal and recover.

I believe this will lead to a well rounded integration of study and social skills. I could better integrate all these areas by continuing to immerse myself with the wealth of knowledge and real world experience through my internship which will hopefully be an important stepping stone in my career path.

E-portfolio

My e-Portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinary because the work that I have submitted to my e-portfolio covers all of my different areas and allow me to express myself and feelings in all of my areas. I don’t not think that I will need to use my e-portfolio for a job because of my intended field but if I were going to be applying to full-time jobs I would use some of my pieces to better explain my IDS degree to a future employer and why I chose the path that I did. And I must say am I far from an artistic person when it comes to designing things so I would probably make my portfolio very organized and easy to move around making it stand out for that rather than for being very eye catching. I think some of the work that could be used as evidence are the power points that were I put together that incorporated a person for all of my areas of study and show how having all that in one person instead of needing three individuals is very beneficial .
-Jessica

Like Jessica, I believe my e–Portfolio will demonstrate all the areas of my interdisciplinary studies. I plan to have 4 different areas in my e-portfolio including, health science, life & biomedical sciences, commerce, and psychology. I changed my part of my major from life & biomedical sciences to commerce last spring so I have ample credits in all my areas of discipline. Because of this, I figure why not show all my areas of study in my portfolio. I am not sure whether or not I will need to use my e-Portfolio to obtain a job after I graduate due to my internship. However, I still plan on putting my best work in it because I never know what the future may hold. One of my pieces of work I plan to use was from my physiology class, where we had to make a PowerPoint and perform a presentation on an illness in which I happened to go through prior to the semester. I believe by using this assignment it will show some of the adversity I have had to overcome to be where I am at now. As far as the lay out goes I plan to use earth tone colors and have a well organized and thought out portfolio to really show the type of person I am.

Introduction's

Hi! My name is Jessica West. I chose UCF for a few different reason, one because it isn’t too far to drive home when I want to and two because it is in a city and not just a small college town. I chose IDS as my major because it allowed me to take a variety of different classes that I was interested in while just one track I would not have been able to do that. My short term goal is to get into Physicians Assistant School for next June, and my long term goal is to graduate PA school and travel through South America as a health care provider.

So a little more about myself. My areas of study and minor are health science, behavioral/social science, and life/biomedical science. I am in my last semester at UCF so I guess you would say I am a fifth year senior.... And to be honest I try not to explain interdisciplinary studies to other but if I were to, I would probably explain it as getting 2 or 3 minors in different areas rather than focusing on one subject because it was the best way for me to accomplish my goals. I think the advantages of interdisciplinary studies are the diverse courses it allows you to take while still having some type of focus, but I think that it also has draw backs in the way that some people perceive it. As if it is a major where you can get pick enough classes to equal 120 credits and get your degree. I don’t believe everyone feels that way but there are defiantly some.

Hello! My name is Janelle Warren and currently a senior at UCF studying health science, commerce, and minoring in psychology. Right now, I'm interning at Physical Therapy Specialists and learning a lot about physical therapy. After I graduate, I will be moving to Gainesville while my boyfriend attends UF to major in horticulture science and I will be attending CFCC to become a certified physical therapist assistant. I plan to test the waters a bit as a PTA before I make the jump to get a doctorate in physical therapy. Once my boyfriend and I are done with all our schooling, we plan to move to our favorite city in Florida, New Smyrna Beach. There we plan to own a plant nursery business where we can wake up every morning with the sun go surfing, make our living, then maybe go surfing some more. Over all, we plan to live a healthy and active livestyle with as much nature as possible!
