Cover Letters & Resume

What are ways your resume can highlight your interdisciplinarity?

I think the only way that a resume can highlight interdisciplinarity is by your work or volunteer experience because it makes evident how you are planning on utilizing all of the areas that you are knowledgeable in and making them useful for a future employer.

What are some questions about cover letters you've have?

Do you think it is more beneficial to be professional or trying to show more of your personality in your cover letter?

To Whom It May Concern: I am applying for the position of Administrative/Marketing Assistant, which was advertised on the Palm Beach Post website, http://www.palmbeachpost.com/. The position seems to fit very well with my experiences, education, and career interests.

Your position requires skills in telephone, follow-up, and computer skills. As a current student from the College of Business at the University of Central Florida, I have had the opportunity to develop my skills in a professional setting and am ready to perform to the best of my ability. I have worked in an office setting for more than five years, where I have learned proficient use in the Microsoft Office suite and customer service, including phone sales. I was also responsible for interviewing all candidates for my previous job, as well as in my current position. I was awarded two awards based on customer service, including Employee of the Year in 2005 and Employee of the Fortnight in 2003. I am a highly motivated and organized individual who is willing to dedicate the time to make sure any job is performed correctly. My enclosed resume provides more details on my qualifications.

My background and career goals seem to match your job requirements well. I am confident that I can perform the job effectively. I looked into your company online and find it very interesting and would love to jump start my career with you.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to talking with you.

What are questions about resumes that you have and/or share some advice?

I do not have any really good advice or question but what I can say is that resumes are the first thing that a future employer see and in my opinion are a crucial part of making you appealing to them. 1. I also believe that the only way to highlight interdisciplinarity on a resume is to show it through your past experiences I.E work, volunteering, classes taken and internships. A question about cover letters are what exactly is supposed to be put on them? I have never has to submit a resume for any of the jobs that I hold so I don’t have any advice for making a resume or cover letter at this point. I have found career services helpful in forming a resume as of recent though.

  4. highlighting key points that make you seem unique can never hurt. Also I think making short direct statements about character strenths and volenteer work is a plus. But I also believe knowing when a job opens up and being the first one to apply tells the employer something about your work ethics.

  5. I also found the website on cover letters to be helpful. Not ever have used one myself, I was able to understand how they complement the resume itself. This has been the biggest learning experience for me so far in this class. How to build a meaningful resure.

  6. Chris, I agree with your statement that the best way to show someone’s interdisciplinarity is through past work and experiences. I think anyone can list several different skills but it is hard to show how you integrate those skills.

  7. Abraham, I agree that being one of the first can show your initiative and part of your work ethics as well.

  8. My resume can highlight my interdisciplinarity by listing the skills I have and showing how I integrate the skills. I think resumes do a good job of listing multiple skills and past experiences and education, however, I think internships in which you can actually show how you integrate your skills is the best way to display your interdisciplinarity. Like Chris, I also haven’t had to show any type of resume or previous job experience for jobs that I have had.

  9. David, It is hard to show how different skills have been integrated, but i think that by having a diverse past work experience you can show how you have integrated your skills to your future employers.

  10. Even though I don’t think I will ever need a resume, I agree with Abraham that all the websites and resources teach you how to construct a powerful resume. Also, I agree that it does show a lot to be the first person to apply for a job. That in itself shows that you are resourceful in finding out about the open job and eager to apply and get the job.

  11. To me, resumes are one of the most important aspects of applying for a new job. When I walk into an interview, I am well aware that the employer has no knowledge about me, my past, or what I am about, so its important to include an up-to-date resume to highlight my attributes. With that being said, resumes can show off interdisciplinarity only as well as its written. An employer has to be told how different fields contributed to a certain activity and most likely won't get the same impression just from reading a resume.

  12. I have a concern. Like Chris, I have never needed to supply a resume for any of the jobs that I have had, and I was wondering how current I should keep my extra information. I graduated from high school over two years ago and I was really active in high school clubs and organizations; however, now that I am in college, I don't find nearly as much free time to get involved. Should I still include my high school honors and organizational positions on a resume for a job at this point in my life so that I have extra information, or should I just leave that off? I was just curious really.
