Hi! My name is Jessica West. I chose UCF for a few different reason, one because it isn’t too far to drive home when I want to and two because it is in a city and not just a small college town. I chose IDS as my major because it allowed me to take a variety of different classes that I was interested in while just one track I would not have been able to do that. My short term goal is to get into Physicians Assistant School for next June, and my long term goal is to graduate PA school and travel through South America as a health care provider.
So a little more about myself. My areas of study and minor are health science, behavioral/social science, and life/biomedical science. I am in my last semester at UCF so I guess you would say I am a fifth year senior.... And to be honest I try not to explain interdisciplinary studies to other but if I were to, I would probably explain it as getting 2 or 3 minors in different areas rather than focusing on one subject because it was the best way for me to accomplish my goals. I think the advantages of interdisciplinary studies are the diverse courses it allows you to take while still having some type of focus, but I think that it also has draw backs in the way that some people perceive it. As if it is a major where you can get pick enough classes to equal 120 credits and get your degree. I don’t believe everyone feels that way but there are defiantly some.
Hello! My name is Janelle Warren and currently a senior at UCF studying health science, commerce, and minoring in psychology. Right now, I'm interning at Physical Therapy Specialists and learning a lot about physical therapy. After I graduate, I will be moving to Gainesville while my boyfriend attends UF to major in horticulture science and I will be attending CFCC to become a certified physical therapist assistant. I plan to test the waters a bit as a PTA before I make the jump to get a doctorate in physical therapy. Once my boyfriend and I are done with all our schooling, we plan to move to our favorite city in Florida, New Smyrna Beach. There we plan to own a plant nursery business where we can wake up every morning with the sun go surfing, make our living, then maybe go surfing some more. Over all, we plan to live a healthy and active livestyle with as much nature as possible!

Hello my name is Abraham Rivera. My majors are Law and e-Commerce with a minor in Sociology. This semester is the start of my senior year. It is also my first semester attending classes on campus.
ReplyDeleteI was originally a Finance major at UNF in Jacksonville. But at the beginning of last summer I was activated for a year to leave Jacksonville and spend half that time in Afghanistan. Well because I was at the junior level at UNF they offered no on-line classes for my major. So I talk to UCF and they told me about the IDS program. Which allowed me take classes while over seas, graduate a year early, and obtain the same job I would have with the Finance degree. So all in all it has worked out well transfering over. Plus, I enjoy the area and it an hour closer to Patrick. That's the base I work at. Right now I'm a humble Staff Sergeant in the Air Force Reserves enlisted ranks. But as soon as I graduate I plan on going active duty as a commissioned officer to finish my 20 in which ever branch can offer a more fullfilling career. The reserves has given me a sense of whether or not active duty for the long hall was my cup of tea or not. And has provided me with many character building experiences and a means to put myself through college.
Hi, my name is David Garazi, I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. This is my fourth year at UCF and I just changed my major to interdisciplinary studies. My major areas of study are biological sciences and commerce. After undergrad at UCF I would like to attend Nova Dental School in south Florida in hopes to follow in my fathers footsteps as a dentist. When people ask me what the interdisciplinary studies major is, I simply explain that it is a major which lets you spread out your course work in order to have a more well-rounded knowledge of several subjects instead of a strict focus on one subject. In my opinion, the fact that the interdisciplinary studies major covers several subjects is a powerful asset that all IDS students will benefit from. I really enjoy the major because it allows me to take the required classes for dental school while still taking some business classes I want to take and having them all count towards my major.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Chris England. I am from Clearwater Florida. I currently am in my junior year here at UCF. My areas of study are Legal Studies, Psychology, and Business. I am minoring in all three areas, and am planning on attending law school after graduating from UCF. My goal is to attend an Ivy League school, because I believe I will have the best chance of obtaining a job with a big law firm if I do. I explain the IDS major to others by telling them that it is a way to tailor a major to suit your individual needs after graduation. Just as Jessica said, the IDS program allows you to take a diverse amount of course while still focusing them in a general direction. I think a disadvantage of the major is if you end up not being able to go in the direction you wanted to with your major after graduation. This is why I believe it is important for IDS majors to also have a backup plan just in case their original plan doesn’t work.
ReplyDeleteHey Abraham it's really cool that you are taking law classes as well! Are you taking any in a specific area or are you just trying to get a general base of knowledge of the Legal system?
ReplyDeleteHey Jessica, I am also minoring in Psychology. Are there any particular psychology professors that you would reccomend?
ReplyDeleteHey Everyone,
ReplyDeleteI know I'm late but I wanted to put up my introduction anyways just so you could learn a little bit more about me. My name is Emily Lumpkin and my majors are Commerce and Behavioral/Social Science with a History minor. I am a junior at UCF and actually just switched to interdisciplinary studies. Sorry I didn’t give you anything to reply to guys.
Hi Chris. I have no plans to do anything in the criminal justice arena. However, I do have a personal appreciation for law. Right now I am taking only the 5 basic classes that prepare you for the paraleagal exam. And I too hope to obtain my next degree at a more prestiges institute.
ReplyDeleteHello Jessica and Janelle. I was hoping you could give me a clear pic of how to use your audience and purpose. This whole e-portfolio is still a little confusing to me. Who is this for future employers? If so how are you suppose to show this to them? Would you just refer them to it in your resume? Please help me understand this class from a students perspective. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading through ch.5 and just wanted to post some thoughts for anyone to comment on. I thought the updated taxonomy had interesting results, saying that interdisciplinary research uses the highest levels of knowledge. Another tool I found interesting was the triangulation of disciplinary. I feel it discribes the main concepts for becoming an effective problem solver. Ch 5 overall seems to have many principles for trying to get you open minded, but I feel it doesn't present enough practical examples to give a clear picture of the many concepts discussed in order to make a confident distinction between them all.
